Steven J. Karr, AIA Emeritus

 

Steven J. Karr, AIA Member Emeritus, Principal Architect of his firm, Steven J. Karr, AIA Inc. from 1984 through 2023, directed the firm's delivery of professional and technical services. His thorough understanding of the development process combined with more than 40 years of experience with a broad range of building types, construction technologies, planning strategies and design methodologies is demonstrated by the firm's proven and successful record of completed projects.

Steve has participated in public/private partnerships with local municipal agencies for the revitalization of commercial properties in Montgomery County, Prince George's County, the City of Alexandria and the District of Columbia. He has presented testimony before many of the metropolitan area governing councils, planning and architectural review boards and historic preservation commissions and has been qualified as an expert witness in the field of Architecture.

Steve currently serves on the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services Advisory Committee. Steve served on the City of Rockville's 2016-2017 King Farm Farmstead Task Force and served on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County from July of 2004 through July of 2007. In January of 2006 Steve received the first "Harry Semmes Award" for "outstanding service in appreciation for ... significant contributions to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County". In 2004, Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan appointed Steve to serve a 2 year term on the Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee where advocated for regulatory changes to the Wheaton Retail Preservation Overlay Zone adopted by the Montgomery County Council in July of 2006.

Steve served as the 1995 President of the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and was the recipient of the Chapter's 2004 Paul H. Kea Medal for Service to the Profession in acknowledgment "for all his volunteer activities, Steve has set the standard for service to the profession and to his community". He has also served as Co-Moderator of the Montgomery County Planning Board's Commercial Zones Advisory Task Force, as President of the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce and as a Director of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce for the term 1990-1991. Former Montgomery County Executive Sidney Kramer awarded Steve two Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of his voluntary contributions to the revitalization of the Wheaton Central Business District and for six years of service, both as Chairperson and Commissioner, on the Historic Preservation Commission of Montgomery County. In 1989, Steve received the Montgomery County Council of Chambers Business Appreciation Award for his firm's work in the Wheaton business community.

Steve received his Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Housing Economics from Cornell University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
